With each acetyl CoA that enters the citric acid cycle, three NADH (9 ATP), one FADH (2 ATP), and one GTP are produced (1 ATP). Each mole of acetyl-CoA will therefore yield 12 ATP molecules in total.

Electron transport from the citric acid cycle's energy precursors in step 3 causes oxidative phosphorylation, which phosphorylates ADP to produce ATP. In animals the majority of the energy required in biosynthesis, preserving appropriate ion balance, and mechanical work comes from oxidative phosphorylation.
