"The Lady or the Tyger," by Frank R. Stockton, is symmetrical because the beginning and the end of the story describe similar situations.

At first, the king comes up with an idea for a new punishment, which he later uses to torture his daughter's lover. He orders him to open one of two doors. Behind one of them there is a lady, and behind the other there is a tiger. If he door he chooses has the lady, he will marry her instantly. If he chooses the tiger, he will die. The princess has figured out which door has the lady and which the tiger, but she is forced to leave his lover - either he marries the lady or dies.
