The US was the first democratic nation to recognize the individual rights of citizens. This happened when in 1791, Congress drafted the first 10 amendments to the 1787 American Constitution.

The Ten Amendments make up the Bill of Rights, and consist of a package of measures to protect the rights of all citizens, residents, and visitors on US territory. The Bill of Rights protects freedom of expression, freedom of religion, the right to keep and use weapons, freedom of assembly and freedom of petition. This was a milestone for civilization and was later copied by other democracies.
