After reading The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, why would a reader consider Cassius to be Brutus' foil? Support your answer with
shepuryov [24]

Answer: Brutus is more naive, while Cassius is manipulative and deceitful.

Explanation:

Shakespeare's Julius Caesar portrays the moral dilemma of Brutus, Caesar's friend. He makes a decision to participate in a conspiracy to murder Caesar, led by Cassius.

Cassius and Brutus differ in that Cassius is cunning and corrupt, while Brutus is naive. Although both of them plot to kill Caesar, Cassius turns out to be more treacherous than Brutus. Brutus first hesitates to join the plot, but eventually joins because of his naivety. Cassius is, on the other hand, the one who initiates the murder plot, and is a quite manipulative character.

Please select the word from the list that best fits the definition a person who takes power by force and rules with total author
topjm [15]

According to the Cambridge and Merriam-Webster dictionaries, a person who takes power by force and rules with total authority is a dictator. A dictator is not elected by the people, and extends his powers into the private lives of the people. He usually enjoys a cult of personality throughout the nation. An example of dictator would be Hitler in Germany between 1933 and 1945.

You should bear in mind that there are two other words which could fit this definiton, with some nuance:

 • if this ruler uses its unlimited power unfairly and/or cruelly, it is a tyrant;
 • if this ruler came to power through elections which he rigged, and simply rules without any political opposition, it is an autocrat.

after the civil war, what were some challenges african americans faced in their pursuit of freedom and life as free men and woma
Sergeeva-Olga [200]

Answer:

Reconstruction was the turbulent era following the Civil War. The effort to reintegrate Southern states from the Confederacy and 4 million newly-freed slaves into the United States proved to be difficult. Under the administration of President Andrew Johnson, new southern state legislatures passed restrictive “black codes” to control the labor and behavior of former slaves and other African Americans. Outrage in the North over these codes eroded support for the approach known as Presidential Reconstruction and led to the triumph of the more radical wing of the Republican Party. During Radical Reconstruction, which began with the passage of the Reconstruction Act of 1867, newly enfranchised blacks gained a voice in government for the first time in American history, winning election to southern state legislatures and even to the U.S. Congress. In less than a decade, however, reactionary forces–including the Ku Klux Klan–would reverse the changes wrought by Radical Reconstruction in a violent backlash that restored white supremacy in the South.
