El síndrome de Ulises, también conocido como síndrome del emigrante con estrés crónico y múltiple, es un cuadro psicológico que afecta a inmigrantes que viven situaciones extremas.

Aunque en muchos casos la migración puede suponer más una solución que un problema, nunca es un proceso fácil. En la vida de quien emigra todo cambia de golpe, y el cambio es mayor cuanto más lejos vaya. No solo deja atrás a los amigos o a la familia, también el paisaje, los olores, la lengua, las costumbres… Y, como consecuencia de ello, la migración transforma la propia identidad.

El Síndrome de Ulises, además, va más allá del duelo migratorio clásico. Tiene poco que ver con la estampa prototípica de la emigración de nuestros antepasados, con hombres y mujeres diciendo adiós con la mano desde la borda de grandes transatlánticos. Y está estrechamente relacionado con las condiciones extremas en las que viajan y viven muchos migrantes del siglo XXI, y su soledad.

La separación forzada, el miedo a perder la vida en el camino, la lucha por comer cada día, las amenazas de las mafias… todo ello alimenta hoy el Síndrome de Ulises. Así lo señala el psiquiatra Joseba Achotegui, que conoce bien esta realidad. Fue él quien acuñó el término, y su trabajo en el Servicio de Atención Psicopatológica y Psicosocial a Inmigrantes y Refugiados (SAPPIR) le ha permitido conocer también su evolución.
