They filter pollutants and provide breeding grounds for a variety of organisms .Eventually  they provide food and shelter for them .Some of this organisms include fish , which is food to human beings .

They also provide recreational grounds for the inhabitants , thus attracting settlement .

Lastly , the economic importance of this is that they provide grounds for , ports , ship movement and raw materials for industries .
