3 x 12 is 36. So he ate 36 jellybeans.

Well the question says he ate 3 boxes of Jelly beans with 12 in each box. 

We need to multiply 3 and 12 to get his total amount of jellybeans. 

12 x 3 = 36 

Answer = Dan ate 36 Jelly beans altogether.
