Splitting is a defense mechanism that some people also call all-or-nothing thinking or black-and-white thinking. It occurs when an individual's thinking fails to bring together the positive and negative split qualities of self and others to become a more realistic and cohesive whole. From the example, when Scarlett O'Hara said "I'll think about it tomorrow", she said so because at that point, her brain could not put all the information together and hence she was going to reflect and think about it before making an input.
