Word problem-in a movie script time traveler wanted to save his wife who died the same year. The couple was the dam age. However
drek231 [11]

Represent Age of Time Traveler =========> X

Solve:

x = 3(x - 20 )

Step 1: Simplify Both sides of equation:

x = 3(x - 20 )

x = (3) (x) + (3) ( - 20 ) (Distribute ):

x = 3x + - 60

x = 3x - 60

Step 2: Subtract 3x from both sides:

x - 3x = 3x - 60 - 3x

- 2x = - 60

Step 3: Divide both sides by -2:

- 2x / - 2 = - 60 / - 2

x = 30

Answer: Our Time Traveler is 30 years old.

Hope that helps : )

Jet001 [13]

Justin buys 4 hot dogs ad 5 pop corn boxes at the baseball game.

<h3>Equation</h3>

Equation is an expression which is used to show the relationship between two or more variables and numbers.

Let x represent the number of hot dogs and y represent the boxes of popcorn.

Justin buys a total of 9 snacks. Hence:

  • x + y = 9   (1)

He buys popcorn 3 less than twice as many hot dogs. Hence:

  • y = 2x - 3
  • 2x - y = 3    (2)

Solving equations 1 and 2 simultaneously gives:

x = 4, y = 5

Justin buys 4 hot dogs ad 5 pop corn boxes at the baseball game.

What is the rate of change of y with respect to x for this function?
loris [4]

bearing in mind that the average rate of change = slope, and for that we can simply use two points off the table.

\bf \begin{array}{|cc|ll} \cline{1-2} x&y\\ \cline{1-2} -2&12\\ 0&3\\ 3&-10.5\\ 7&-28.5\\ \cline{1-2} \end{array}\qquad \qquad \begin{array}{llll} (\stackrel{x_1}{-2}~,~\stackrel{y_1}{12})\qquad (\stackrel{x_2}{3}~,~\stackrel{y_2}{-10.5}) \\\\\\ slope \implies \cfrac{\stackrel{rise}{ y_2- y_1}}{\stackrel{run}{ x_2- x_1}}\implies \cfrac{-10.5-12}{3-(-2)} \\\\\\ \cfrac{-10.5-12}{3+2}\implies \cfrac{-22.5}{5}\implies -\cfrac{4.5}{1}\implies -4.5 \end{array}
