Here we see the sense of otherness to which Tom and Daisy feel compared to "normal" people. Tom and Daisy are part of the super- rich. Nick becomes their acceptable connection with the rest of the world where people work for a living. Daisy's smile is rather condescending. She defines herself by her husband's money so the imagery is charged with the juxtaposition of the world of immense wealth with everybody else under them.
