The Confederacy had numerous rings of defense blockades that were difficult to go through with ships since the Union wanted to enter through the rivers. This was of paramount importance for the Confederacy because New Orleans was the largest Confederate city and an important strategic center for deployment of troops. Union troops eventually managed to take it.
