Simon de Montfort, after defeating King Henry III's forces at the battle of Lewes in 1264, called together all the barons and representatives from the shires of England in what is described as the first example of British Parliament. <span>King John of England used the Magna Carta to quell some rebellious barons. From there, the Glorious Revolution in 1688-1689 resulted in William III (William of Orange) and Mark II ascending to the English throne which realigned power - giving the monarchy limited power and Parliament gaining power over the monarchy with the English Bill of Rights.</span>
