In this excerpt, the author describes one horrific scene from war and he shows that how individual a war is, i.e, it is not the same as everyday life situations and it is exceptional in a way even beyond our exception.

This second excerpt also shows the emotions of war left on the author. After describing his emotions, the author uses this sentence in order to convey the physical effects of war on the soldier.
