Explanation:

On June 2, 1958, Richard Loving who was a white man and Mildred Jeter a mixed African American and Native American woman got married . In July 1958, police entered the couple's home in the morning hours and arrested them due to violation of the state’s ban on interracial marriage.  In January 1959 there was a hearing of the case in a Virginia state court and they were pleaded guilty to having violated Section 20-58 of the Virginia state code, which prohibited marriage between white and colored persons. They were sentenced to one year in jail and given an option of the sentence been suspended if they could leave the state immediately and not return as man and wife for a period of 25 years.
