Thomas Jefferson has a strong belief in states rights, meaning he thought that the states should hold more power then the federal government. He made sure that the people were thought of first, even throughout his presidency. This is also why Jefferson had a strict interpretations the constitution. The constitution was put in place to protect the rights of the citizens, and he wanted to follow those rules and protect those rights during his time in office. This is way he had such a hard time dealing with Alexander Hamilton, he believed in a strong federal government and had a loose interpretation of the constitution.
