The author's purpose for writing this passage is to explain the printing press Gutenberg invented and why he invented it because it explains that at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance there was a demand for a cheaper method of printing and that people tried to improve the method of movable metal type to be able to produce books on a large scale and this is the description of what led to Gutenberg's work. Then, the text explain the printing press that Gutenberg invented.
