When you distribute the one you will be left with x + 12 = 4x - 1. Subtract the 12 from the left side, and add it to the right. x = 4x - 13. Subtract the 4x from the right, add it to the left. You are left with -3x = -13. You can only divide both sides by -3, leaving you with x = -13/-3.
