During the press conference, he mentioned that he didn't expect all that fuss to happen since this story and many other similar to it about alien invasion had become popular among kids through comics and novels at the time. Being aware of the existence of this science fiction story he thought adults would know that it was the broadcasting of a literary piece, not an actual Martians attack.
