Themes are difficult to identify because you have to look deep into the story. Narratives don't usually point out the theme, you have to find the theme yourself. What did the narrative learn? That is useful for finding a theme.

Theme's are harder to identify because different people have different views. Nobody sees everything the exact same. So it's harder to find an exact theme, because people will take different things from the material.
