This second world war was initiated in Europe when Adolf Hitler and his army invaded Poland in 1939, soon after agreeing to a nonaggression pact with the Soviet Union; this pact just secretly excluded the fact that “Poland was to be partitioned between the two powers, enabled Germany to attack Poland without the fear of Soviet intervention,” as stated by the Holocaust Encyclopedia website. In response to German aggression, Great Britain and France declared war on Nazi Germany.
Since the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931, there had been conflict and battles in Asia. There had been war between the Chinese and the Japanese from as early as 1937.
