What does it mean to say that a person is a liberal, or to say that a thing may be described with this word? The answer, as is so often the case with the English language, is “it depends.”

liberty

'Liberal' shares a root with 'liberty' and can mean anything from "generous" to "loose" to "broad-minded." Politically, it means "“a person who believes that government should be active in supporting social and political change."

Liberal can be traced back to the Latin word liber (meaning “free”), which is also the root of liberty ("the quality or state of being free") and libertine ("one leading a dissolute life"). However, we did not simply take the word liber and make it into liberal; our modern term for the inhabitants of the leftish side of the political spectrum comes more recently from the Latin liberalis, which means “of or constituting liberal arts, of freedom, of a freedman.”

We still see a strong connection between our use of the word liberal and liber in the origins of liberal arts. In Latin, liber functioned as an adjective, to describe a person who was “free, independent,” and contrasted with the word servus (“slavish, servile”). The Romans had artes liberales (“liberal arts”) and artes serviles (“servile arts”); the former were geared toward freemen (consisting of such subjects as grammar, logic, and rhetoric), while the latter were more concerned with occupational skills.

We borrowed liberal arts from French in the 14th century, and sometime after this liberal began to be used in conjunction with other words (such as education, profession, and pastime). When paired with these other words liberal was serving to indic

The introduction to how Communism affects South, Central, and Southwest Asia?
Darina [25.2K]

Answer:

Communism affected all three regions: South, Central, and Southwest Asia. First, Russia had a Revolution, called the Russian Revolution. It turned the monarchy of Russia into a Communist republic. Then, the Cold War started because US did not like Communism, and therefore did not want it to spread.

Then, there was the Chinese Civil War between the people who wanted democracy (who fled to Taiwan to create their own government) and the Communists (the people who were reinforced by the Russians.) In fact, the United States did not interfere with this war, which created major problems.

If the United States was helping the anti-Communists, China would not have become Communist. But, in the end of the war, the results were clear - the Soviets and the North Chinese had won the war.

Then, there was the Vietnamese War. China and Russia were helping North Vietnam, which wanted to become a communist, and the US finally helped South Vietnam. But it was too late. Eventually, the Chinese taught the North Vietnamese how to use guerilla tactics. In the end, the US was out-smarted.

The United States withdrew their troops from Vietnam, which made matters worse. South Vietnam quickly got invaded a few months later, and there were too little US troops to help the combat effort.

Then, there was the Korean War, which was a stalemate and which required a treaty. North Korea wanted communism for the whole country, but South Korea was very powerful, and the US also helped. North Korea was almost finished invading when US and NATO troops arrived. They took back the whole entire Korea and split it.

That is your introduction. I hope it helped!
