Shoguns were the military dictators who ruled during the medieval Japan, through a feudal system. They were nominally appointed by the emperor as the de facto rulers of the country.  

Based on the nature of the ruling classes in Japan, the emperor was one seen to have acted as the chief priest of Shinto, the official religion of the nation and the Shogun was the head of the army.  

The shogun received the power of the emperor as symbol of authority.

The shogun were also said to have sought throughout the history of the country, to keep the emperor away from the politics of the country, thereby relegating the emperors from the circumference of influence.
