In 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. This resulted in the California Gold Rush. This time period saw thousands of American citizens move to California in hopes of finding gold and becoming rich. This also helped California's population increase rapidly. Thanks to this influx of people, California was able to apply for statehood in 1850.
