In the early 1830s, the white actor Thomas Dartmouth “Daddy” Rice was propelled to stardom for performing "Minstrel Routines" as the fictional “Jim Crow,” a character of African American race as someone who was clumsy, dimwitted black slave. This character was pure comic relief. As the show grew in popularity, “Jim Crow” became a widely used derogatory term for blacks. Once the laws came around.
