A 165 inch rod is leaning up against a wall, but is sliding down the wall so that the vertical distance between the top of the r

od and the floor is decreasing at a rate of 2 inches per second. How fast the is the horizontal distance between the bottom of the rod and the base of the wall changing when the vertical distance is 153 inches

Answer:

the horizontal distance is increasing at a rate of 4.953 in/s

Step-by-step explanation:

since the rod is leaning up against the wall and its length L is constant , then the relationship between y ( vertical distance ) , x (horizontal distance ) and L is

x² + y² = L²

then using derivatives with respect to the time t in both sides of the equation

2*x*dx/dt + 2*y*dy/dt = 0

dx/dt = y/x*dy/dt

since we know that x² + y² = L² → x= √(L² -y²) , then

dx/dt = -y/√(L² -y²)*dy/dt

replacing values

dx/dt = -153 in /√[(165 in)² -(153 in)²]* (-2 in/s) = 4.953 in/s

therefore the horizontal distance is increasing at a rate of 4.953 in/s

Help and explain !!!!( Solve using the substitute method )
alex41 [277]

Answer:

x=13

y= -9

(13, -9)

Step-by-step explanation:

If we are solving using the substitution method, we can take the first equation and set it to y so y=4-x.

Then, we can take that equation and plug it into the bottom one so

3x+4(4-x)=3

Simplify:

3x+16-4x=3

-x=-13

x=13

We can then plug 13 into any of the two given equations (I am just going to plug it into the top one)

So, 13+y=4 which y= -9

0.75,1.75,2.75,3.75 is arithmetic or geometric?
Semenov [28]

Hello from MrBillDoesMath!

Answer:

Arithmetic

Discussion:

First glance at the numbers shows each term is 1 larger than the preceding terms. So we are adding the constant 1 to each term to get the next term. This is an arithmetic progression.

Thank you,

What 2 numbers can you add up to get 24 and multiply to get -25?
coldgirl [10]
If you would like to find 2 numbers which you can add up to get 24 and multiply to get -25, you can calculate this using the following steps:

a + b = 24 ... b = 24 - a
a * b = -25 ... a * (24 - a) = -25 ... 24 * a - a^2 = -25 ... 0 = a^2 - 24 * a - 25
0 = (a - 25) * (a + 1)
1. a = 25
2. a = -1

b = 24 - a
1. b = 24 - 25 = -1
2. b = 24 - (-1) = 25

The numbers you are looking for are -1 and 25.
