The US Civil War was the deadliest American war leading to a large loss of able bodied young men. After the civil war, the South was left to rebuild economies from the ground up following the freedom of their slaves, many of whom left to search for newfound opportunities to the north and west. This often led to Northern states housing factories which were more quickly able to produce goods and services creating a large gap between the two regions.
