1. the government helps to keep things running in an orderly fashion by setting standards for businesses and companies, telling them what they can and cannot do (such as, selling alcohol to people under 21 years of age, paying employees less than minimum wage, etc.)
2. they provide public goods for private companies that don't have the resources and tools to do so themselves
3. they provide various forms of assistance to the unemployed, mostly for the fact of keeping the economy running smoothly and to have a higher rank of quality of life
