The South's four major crops are: Corn, Soybean, Wheat and Cotton.

<em>Corn (Maize</em>) - in 2015, the area harvested maize was <em>87 millions acres</em>. It was named the state's official grain in Illinois.

<em>Soybean</em> - By 2000 covered <em>70 million acres</em>. (america's largest crop).

<em>Wheat</em> - the harvesting occurs on land area of <em>60-63 million acres</em>.

<em>Cotton</em> - remains a major export of Southern United States.

Before the Civil War, or <em>Antebellum era, </em>the south was mainly an agricultural region, the major southern crops were:

Cotton on the first place, followed by grain, tobacco and sugar.

These are placed in order of the amount of land that was devoted to producing each one of them.
