William Barret Travis was born August 1, 1809 and died March 6, 1836. He was an American teacher, lawyer, and soldier. He was in command of the Texan forces at the Battle of the Alamo, where he was killed along with all of his men. He was surrounded by thousands of Mexican troops and facing near-certain death, he wrote a letter. It was considered to be one of history's most heroic letters.
