Heteronormativity refers to unfounded beliefs that people are heterosexual and possess either typically male or female characteristics pertaining to their respective gender. Basically, people take for granted that any given person is heterosexual and conform's to their gender roles. Heteronormativity is based on the belief that hetereosexuality is a given and the only naturally occuring sexual orientation.
