Rusesabagina said it was a quest for power and a fear of difference that motivated the massacre of the Tutsi's by the Hutu's in Rwanda in 1994 (like the Nazi holocaust) and the deaths of 800,000 Tutsi's could have been prevented if the UN peace keeping mission's pleas for support to disarm the Hutu's (as chronicled by Romeo Dallaire) had been acted upon.
1) It was quite necessary not only for Buck, but also for others struggling to survive in the wild North. If he hadn't killed Spitz it it could have been very dangerous for others because he was very aggressive due to the hunger. Even though he was the leader, blinded by hunger he could do anything to survive, forgetting about the rest of dogs.
2) If he hadn't died he could have get many other innocent lives, like he had done to Curley. This character yielded to the external conflict of the harsh wild conditions, and his instings were much more powerful than his sense of justice so he could have bring harm until he reached his own safety.

Tom doesn't like attending church, he endures it, and is restive all through it. He has gone many times though, he knows the prayer so well that his ear detects any small change made by the clergyman from the regular route of the prayer. Tom doesn't like change because he considers any changes to the normal prayer unfair, and scoundrelly.
