I am not really sure but you could try working it out this way;
12/27, 24/54, 36/81, 48/108, 60/135, 72/162

72 students have dogs.

12/27=x/162
Multiply diagonally
1944=27x
Isolate the variable by dividing both sides by 27
x=72
