Answers:

x is in quadrant I (first quadrant) in the upper right hand corner

sin(x) = sqrt(3)/2

tan(x) = sqrt(3)

where 'sqrt' is shorthand for 'square root'

============================================

Explanation:

cos(x) = 1/2 shows us that cos(x) > 0. At the same time, we're told that tan(x) > 0. Both cosine and tangent are positive. This only happens when we're in the first quadrant. The first quadrant is to the right of the vertical y axis, and it is above the horizontal x axis. In short, the first quadrant is in the upper right hand corner. Tangent is positive in quadrant III; however, cosine is negative here. Similarly, cosine is positive in Q4, but tangent is negative here.

Use the pythagorean trig identity to determine the value of sin(x)

sin^2(x) + cos^2(x) = 1

sin^2(x) + (1/2)^2 = 1

sin^2(x) + 1/4 = 1

sin^2(x) = 1 - 1/4

sin^2(x) = 3/4

sin(x) = sqrt(3/4)

sin(x) = sqrt(3)/sqrt(4)

sin(x) = sqrt(3)/2 ... sine is positive in quadrant I

Now divide the values of sine and cosine to get tangent

tan(x) = sin(x)/cos(x)

tan(x) = sin(x) divided by cos(x)

tan(x) = sqrt(3)/2 divided by 1/2

tan(x) = sqrt(3)/2 times 2/1

tan(x) = sqrt(3) .... note how the '2's cancel

we see that tangent is positive, so that helps confirm the answer.

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Show that if 3x – 7 = 5, then x = 4.

Here, our given statement is 3x – 7 = 5, and we're asked to prove x = 4.

x=4

Statements Reasons

1. 3x – 7 = 5 Given

2. 3x – 7 + 7 = 5 + 7 Addition of 7 to equation (1)

3. 3x + 0 = 5 + 7 Substitution of –7 + 7 = 0 into (2)

4. 3x = 5 + 7 Substitution of 3x + 0 = 3x into (3)

5. 3x = 12 Substitution of 5 + 7 = 12 into (4)

6. 3x⁄3 = 12⁄3 Dividing equation (5) by 3

7. x = 12⁄3 Substitution of 3x⁄3 = x into (6)

8. x = 4 Substitution of 12⁄3 = 4 into (7)

Is there such a thing as being too descriptive? Yep, and that was it, since over half the proof was devoted to telling the reader how to do arithmetic. We'll typically take numerical computation for granted, and write proofs like this:

Who says V1=V2?
if we simplify we get
(2/3)pir₁³=12pir₂²
for V1 to equal V2

a.
solve for r₁ to find r₁ as a function of r₂
(2/3)pir₁³=12pir₂²
times 3/2 both sides and divide by pi
r₁³=18r₂²
cube root both sides
r₁=∛(18r₂²)

if solve for r₂
(2/3)pir₁³=12pir₂²
divide by 12pi both sides
(1/18)r₁³=r₂²
squer root both sides
√((1/18)r₁³)=r₂

double radius of pond which is r1
√((1/18)r₁³)=r₂
r₁ turns to 2r₁ to double radius
√((1/18)(2r₁)³)=r₂double
√(8(1/18)(r₁)³)=r₂double
(√8)(√((1/18)(r₁)³))=r₂double
√((1/18)r₁³)=r₂ so
(√8)(r₂)=r₂double
(2√2)(r₂)=r₂double
