Jerusalem was holy to Jews, for 3 of their Temples (Built by Solomon, Nehemiah, & Herod) all built their temples at the Temple Mount.
Jerusalem was holy to Christians, because their Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, lived his life and died at Calvary on a Cross, and that they also believed in the Old Testament.
The Arabs believed that their city was sacred to them, because the prophet Muhammad told them.

Republic does not practice direct democracy but rather has a government indirectly controlled by the people. Idk if that helps at all
