The Council of Trent did all the following exceptapproval of the sale of indulgences.

Further Explanations:

The Council of Trent’s were the ecumenical councils in the Catholic Church that was provoked the Protestant Reformation and led to the initiation of “Counter-Reformation”. The council issued some key testimonial that was clarifying the teachings of the Churchincluding scriptures, Original Sins, deliverance, Justification, and honor of saints. It served as the improver of the Church activities and can also be the consequence of the Protestant movement. The period generated the spirit ofquestioningin the mind of peopleagainstthe Church's authority. The sense of questioning arose due to the decrease in faith for the church and practices that were being followed since ancient times. Trent also served as the reformer of the abusive practices being practiced by the Catholic Church like the selling of Indulgences.

The “Principle of Indulgences” was defendedby stating thatthe Church was having authority to grant pardon to penance or grant time in anguish.

The Council of Trent did not approve the sale of indulgences.

The underlying principle of indulgences was upheld -- that the church had authority to grant reprieve to penance or time in purgatory. But the sale of indulgences was stopped.

The Council of Trent served to reform some abuses that were acknowledged by the Catholic Church -- such as the problem of selling indulgences. But mostly the Council aimed to assert the full authority of Roman power and doctrine over the Protestant threat. The Council of Trent held meetings over a span of years from 1545 to 1563.
