They organized secret societies and raiding parties. The most notorious was the Ku Klux Klan. These societies often rode in groups and raid
settlements where former slaves lived. Many were hurt and killed by these
mobs. Apart from former slaves and
Blacks, they also assaulted Whites who support the Republican programs.
Slavery was incredibly divisive because the Us was expanding into the west, and each new state had to decide whether it was going to be "slave" or "free", so there was no middle ground in terms of how the extension of slavery would unfold. This led to the Civil War.
