The experiments involved injecting mescaline into monkeys which caused them to produce licking and chewing movements, as well as convulsions. This was the same kind of behavior seen in people who had temporal lobe epilepsy.

This pointed them towards the direction of further research into the temporal lobe and the amygdala.
