Suppose that without specialization, Iran produces 4 barrels of oil and 6 bottles of olive oil, and Iraq produces 4 barrels of o

il and 4 bottles of olive oil (in millions per day). Are the countries better off or worse off with specialization and trade? Suppose that the terms of trade with specialization are 4 barrels of oil for 4.3 bottles of olive oil, and that 4 barrels of oil are indeed traded for 4.3 bottles of olive oil. With specialization and trade, how many additional barrels of olive oil can Iran consume?

Answer:

With specialization Iran will be able to consume 1.7 bottles of olive oil.

Explanation:

Iran produces 4 barrels of oil and 6 bottles of olive oil.

Iraq produces 4 barrels of oil and 4 bottles of olive oil.

The opportunity cost of producing a barrel of oil for Iran

= \frac{6}{4}

= 1.5

The opportunity cost of producing a barrel of oil for Iraq

= \frac{4}{4}

= 1

Iraq has a lower opportunity cost for producing oil so we can say it has a comparative advantage in producing oil.

The opportunity cost of producing a barrel of olive oil for Iran

= \frac{4}{6}

= 0.66

The opportunity cost of producing a barrel of olive oil for Iraq

= \frac{4}{4}

= 1

Iran has a lower opportunity cost for producing olive oil so we can say it has a comparative advantage in producing it.

The terms of trade with specialization are 4 barrels of oil for 4.3 bottles of olive oil, and that 4 barrels of oil are indeed traded for 4.3 bottles of olive oil.

Without trade, Iran is consuming 4 barrels of oil and 6 bottles of olive oil.

With specialization, Iran will be able to consume

= 6 - 4.3

= 1.7 bottles of olive oil

A report indicated that the average real wage in manufacturing declined by 2 percent between 1990 and 2000. If the CPI equaled 1
inn [45]

Answer:

W = $27.34

Explanation:

Given data:

Percentage Decline in average income is = 2%

CPI in 1990 1.30

CPI in 2000 is 1.69

Average nominal wage is 2000 is $35

Inflation rate is given as

Inflation rate = % Change in CPI

                    = (1.69 / 1.3) - 1

                    = 1.3 - 1 = 0.3 = 30%

Real wage = Nominal wage / Price level,  hence

Percentage change in real wage = % Change in (nominal wage - inflation rate)

-2% = % Change in nominal wage - 30%

% Change in nominal wage = 28%

let nominal wage in 1990 is w

W\times 1.28% = $35

solving for W = $27.34

"Trade raises the economic well-being of a nation in the sense that the gains of the winners exceed the losses of the losers." T
kondaur [170]

Answer:

B) False

Explanation:

Trade usually benefits all the nations involved. We can use an extreme example, Chinese-American trade. America has a huge trade deficit with China, but still the whole country benefits from it. America lost some manufacturing jobs, but they have been replaced by higher paying service related jobs (currently service related jobs account for more than 70% of the total jobs in America).

And more important, American citizens are able to buy very good and cheap products from China and other places. Imagine if we had to pay for only domestic products, we would spend a much larger portion of our income in them.

mihalych1998 [28]

Answer:

The expected return on the portfolio is:

16.75%

Explanation:

a) Data and Calculations:

                                Company A      Company B      Total

Investment                  $3,500              $6,500      $10,000

Expected returns          20%                    15%

Expected returns ($)   $700                $975         $1,675

Expected return on

portfolio = $1,675/$10,000 * 100 = $16.75%

b) The expected return on the portfolio is calculated as the returns on the portfolio in dollars divided by the total investment in the two companies, multiplied by 100.  This gives a value in percentage terms.
