Prior to civil war the southern economy was dependent on the slavery, hence after its abolition it was not easy for the planters to  adjust. Big plantation owners were devised a new system of labor called sharecropping, it became widespread in the cotton and tobacco plantations of south, wage labor was utilized on sugar plantations.In the sharecropping system the black families were given individual plots.
