Modeled after the English Parliament, the General Assembly was established in 1619. In 1643 it became the House of Burgesses. Members would meet at least once a year with their royal governor to decide local laws and determine local taxation.

The House of Burgesses was important because it was the first legislative and democratic government in America. The House of Burgesses played a very important role in the American Revolutionary War, as well as in the creation of an organised, democratic government for the newly created America.
