He commanded a failed invasion to Greece, as the Battle of Thermopylae records him for being unable to push the initiative onwards. He left losing to the Greeks at the Battle of Salamis in 480 bce.

 Ruling from 486 BC until 465 BC he controlled a handful of nations that included the lands shown in the map below:

These nations peacefully coexisted during his administration but it was impossible for a large time to keep control and expand as it ocurred after his death.

Xerxes I also appears as a wise king in the biblical records in the book of Esther. Roman historians regard him a special character as he chose to call himself simply 'king of the Persians and the Medes'.

He led the completion of important key projects like Susa and Persepolis
