In 2000 presidential election George W. Bush contested against AL Gore (Democrat), the initial results showed that  AL Gore had won the popular vote but in reality neither candidate got 270 electoral votes that was required to win the election. The elections were dependent on the results from the state of Florida, the votes in Florida was so close to lead to a recount. In th end election result was decided by US supreme court (Bush vs Gore). The case ruled in favour of George Bush with 5-4 vote.
