On the third day after Ahab finally sights Moby Di.ck, the great whale attacks the boat. Moby Di.ck rams the Pequod and sinks it. Afterwards, Ahab is caught in a harpoon line, resulting in his death. The sinking ship creates a vortex which begins sucking in everything that surrounds it, including the remaining whaleboats and men. The only survivor of this catastrophe is Ishmael.
