I believe the answer would most likely be number 1. Number 2 is correct because, in a story the setting of the story does not actually help the reader understand what that story is about. Number 3 is correct because, in the setting(the beginning of the story) it helps you understand where they are. Sort of like in a play. Finally, number 4 is correct because, the setting often describes how the character is feeling at that point in time. On conclusion, number 1 is wrong because the setting and the plot can very much be separated.
