N x 100 = n%

An example:
<span>12 is 20% of 60. In order to get 12 percent of 60, all you need to do is to divide 12 with 60. To get the percent means to get the parts of 100. To get it in the form of percent, just multiply the quotient by 100. 12/60=.2 x 100 = 20% .</span>

<h3>How to apply percentages in real life applications</h3>

In this problem we have two examples from real life, in which percentages are used. The first is the distance traveled by a runner in a given time and the second is the growth of a person in time. Change in variables based on percentages are described by the following formula:

C' = C · (1 + r / 100)     (1)

Where:

  • C - Initial value
  • C' - Final value
  • r - Percentage of change.

Now we proceed to resolve on each case. 8) a) Please notice that the runner must cover the trail in less time and percentage time must be negative. If we know that C = 70 and r = - 10, then his new fastest time is:

C' = 70 · (1 - 10 / 100)

C' = 70 · 0.90

C' = 63

And again: (C' = 63, r = - 10)

C'' = 63 · (1 - 10 / 100)

C'' = 63 · 0.90

C'' = 56.7

The new fastest time is 56.7 seconds.

b) And the overall percentage improvement is:

r = (|C'' - C| / C) × 100 %

r = (|56.7 - 70| / 70) × 100 %

r = 19 %

The <em>overall percentage</em> improvement is 19 %.

9) If we know that C = 1.25 and r = 10, then the height next year is:

C' = 1.25 · (1 + 10 / 100)

C' = 1.375

And again: (C' = 1.375, r = 12)

C'' = 1.375 · (1 + 12 / 100)

C'' = 1.54

The height after the first increase is 1.375 meters and after the second increase is 1.54 meters.

A bivariate data set has x = 21, sx = 13, y = 55, sy = 27, and r = .88. What is the equation for the regression line of y on x?
earnstyle [38]

Answer:

c) y=16.57+1.83x

Step-by-step explanation:

Equation for regression line of y on x is given as

\hat{y}=mx+b --- (1)

where

\hat{y} = predicted value

m = slope of line

b = intercept

m and b are found as

m=r\frac{S_{y}}{S_{x}}---(2)\\\\b=\bar{y}-m\bar{x}---(3)

r = correlation coefficient = 0.88

Sx = standard deviation for independent variable x = 13

Sy = standard deviation for dependent variable y = 27

\bar{x} = mean value of independent variable x = 21

\bar{x} = mean value of dependent variable y = 55

Substituting these values in (2) and (3)

m=r\frac{S_{y}}{S_{x}}\\\\m=(0.88)\frac{27}{13}\\\\m=1.83

b=\bar{y}-m\bar{x}\\\\b=55-(1.827)(21)\\\\b=16.57

Putting these values of m and b in (1)

y=1.83x+16.57
