One thing you will be able to notice about the structure of the inner mitochondrial membrane is that it is heavily convoluted (folded); in other words, it has a lot of infoldings (what we formally call cristae). This allows lots more ATP production to occur, as infoldings mean the surface area of the inner mitochondrial membrane, meaning more ETCs/ATP synthases can be fitted in that membrane. This has to do with the last step of aerobic respiration, electron transport chain plus chemiosmosis.

Therefore, they are invisible to natural selection. (Since they neither improve nor worsen one individual's chances of survival and reproduction over another.) 

However neutral mutations can still spread into the population by just random replications and matings. This is called genetic drift. 

In other words, they are 'silent'. They are mutations that exist and propagate in populations, but seem to have no effect at all. 

The reason they can become important to evolution is that a day can come when they *do* have an effect. Evident that support the idea that multi cellular that is eukaryotic cell evolved from the prokaryotic cell are the descendents of the separate prokaryotic cells that together form a union which are inter dependent.

For example: The mitochondria which is referred to the energy source of the cell is considered as the great-great-great-granddaughter of a bacterium cell which is free living. This free living bacterium bacterial cell was consumed by an other cell and this remained as the stable guest in the cell. This mitochondria provided chemical energy to the cell and also protected the nutrient rich environment.  which surrounds it. This process of one organism residing in the other organism completely is called endosymbiosis.
