They use propaganda because they need support from the populous. If no one supports the war than the soldiers being drafted would tear up their draft cards and mutiny. If they support it however everyone not just the soldiers are doing their best to help their country which makes the government's job easier. Basically they use propaganda so they aren't fighting a war on 2 fronts.

The allies did a number of things to ensure the success of the D-Day invasion.

The key thing they did is work to convince the Germans that the invasion would come at Calais as opposed to the beaches at Normandy.
