During the Russian Civil War, many felt the Communists would be defeated thanks to the backing of the European powers for the Nationalists.

This turned out not be the case because Communists had  Leon Trotsky on their side and he turned out to be a brilliant military leader who came up with brilliant military strategies that won the war.
