There was the nullification crisis between the state of South Carolina and the federal government in the years 1832 and 1833.

The state was in opposition to the collection of tariffs by the federal government. The southern state tried to make the law null and void. An ordinance was declared that the tariffs of 1828 and 1832 was non binding to the state and it's citizens The state disagreed to pay and also threatened to secede.

Southern carolina was not successful in this nullification. The federal government asserted supremacy. Also president Jackson was authorized to use the military to collect this tariff by the congress.
