While helping an astronomy professor, you discover a binary star system in which the two stars are in circular orbits about the

system's center of mass. From their color and brightness, you determine that each star has the same mass as our Sun. The orbital period of the pair is 31.3 days , based on the oscillation of brightness observed as one star occludes (hides) the other. From this information you are able to ascertain the distance between the stars.
Required:
Calculate the distance between the stars.

Answer:

The value is d =  3.66 *10^{10} \  m

Explanation:

From the question we are told that

The orbital period is T =  31.3 \ days = 31.3 * 86400 = 2704320 \ s

Generally for the centripetal force acting one of the stars will be equal to the gravitational force between the stars and this can be mathematically represented as

F_g  =  F_c

=> \frac{Gm*m}{d^2} =  \frac{mv^2}{r}

Here m represents the mass of each star given that they have same mass and this equal to the mass of the sun whose value is

m  =  1.989*10^{30} \  kg

d(2 * r) is the diameter of the orbit which is distance between each star

r is the radius of the orbit

G is the gravitational constant with value G= 6.67*0^{-11} \  m^2/kg \cdot s^2

v is the velocity of the stars which can be mathematically represented as

v  =  \frac{2 \pi r}{T}

So

\frac{Gmm }{(2 * r)^2}  = \frac{m (\frac{2\pi r}{T} )^2}{r}

=> r =[  \frac{Gm T^2}{16 \pi ^2} ]^{\frac{1}{3} }

=> r =  [\frac{6.67 *10^{-11} * (1.989 *10^{30}) * 2704320^2}{16 * (3.142)^2} ]^{\frac{1}{3} }

=> r =  1.83 *10^{10} \  m

Generally the distance between the star is

d =  2 * r

=> d =  2 * 1.83 *10^{10}

=> d =  3.66 *10^{10} \  m

6. In baseball, a fastball takes about 1/2 second to reach the plate. Assuming that such a pitch is thrown horizontally, compare
klio [65]

Answer:

<em>The ball falls 0.3 m in the first 1/4 seconds, and it falls 0.92 m in the second 1/4 second</em>

Explanation:

<u>Horizontal Launch </u>

When an object is thrown horizontally with a speed v from a height h, it describes a curved path ruled exclusively by gravity until it eventually hits the ground.

To calculate the vertical distance (y) traveled by the object in terms of the time (t) we use:

\displaystyle y=\frac{g.t^2}{2}

The fastball is thrown horizontally. The distance the ball falls in t=1/4 seconds = 0.25 seconds, is:

\displaystyle y_1=\frac{9.8*0.25^2}{2}

\displaystyle y_1=0.30625\ m

The distance the ball falls in t=1/2 seconds = 0.5 seconds is:

\displaystyle y_2=\frac{9.8*0.5^2}{2}

\displaystyle y_2=1.225\ m

The distance it falls in the second 1/4 second is:

y_2-y_1=1.225\ m-0.30625\ m

y_2-y_1=0.91875\ m

The ball falls 0.3 m in the first 1/4 seconds, and it falls 0.92 m in the second 1/4 second

If two objects with different masses are pushing each other, which exerts the greater force?
Sedaia [141]

Newton's 3rd law of motion says that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

This means that the smaller mass exerts a force on the larger mass that is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the force that the larger mass exerts on the smaller mass.

What is the main features of RCCB?
Mekhanik [1.2K]

Main features of RCCB are:

  • Both wires phase and neutral are connected through RCCB.
  • Whenever there is any ground fault occurs, then it trips the circuit.
  • The number of current supplies through the line should go back through neutral.
  • These are a very effective type of shock protection.

Question 3 A woman sitting in a stationary car notices a man cycling past her at 40 km/hr. Five seconds after he passes her car,
Naya [18.7K]

The shortest possible distance in which she catches up with the man is 129.7 m.

The given parameters:

speed of the man, v₁ = 40 km/hr

speed of the woman, v₂ = 70 km/hr

time when the woman started moving, t₁ = 5 seconds

To find:

  • the shortest distance when she catches up with the man

Convert the given speed in km/h to m/s

  • 3.6 km/h = 1 m/s
  • 40 km/h = 40/3.6 = 11.11 m/s
  • 70 km/h = 70/3.6 = 19.44 m/s

Calculate the distance moved by the man before she started following him.

Distance moved by the man = speed x time

                                                = 11.11 m/s  x  5 s

                                                = 55.55 m

Let the time the woman catches up with the man = t

Apply the following simple principle to calculate the time.

The man is moving forward and the woman is moving forward to close the gap between them, thus both speeds are working against each other.

(v_2-v_1)t = 55.55 \ m

  • the difference in the speed is because they are working against each other.

(19.44 - 11.11)t = 55.55\\\\8.33t = 55.55\\\\t = \frac{55.55}{8.33} \\\\t = 6.67 \ s

The time when the woman catches up with the man = 6.67 s

The shortest distance at which the woman catches up with the man is calculated as;

Shortest distance = woman's speed x time when she catches up

                               = 19.44 m/s    x  6.67 s

                               = 129.7 m

Thus, the shortest possible distance in which she catches up with the man is 129.7 m.
